HI-USA Comitment

Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) is the American affiliate of the Hostelling International network of more than 4,000 hostels in over 80 countries. As a nonprofit organization, we are celebrating 75 years of experience in serving young travelers.

Hostelling International USA (registered as American Youth Hostels, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. HI-USA operates a network of over 60 quality hostel accommodations throughout the United States that are inexpensive, safe and clean. Our hostels range from urban high-rise buildings with hundreds of beds to small more remote hostels in rural settings.

Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) strives to operate our hostels in an environmentally responsible manner, working towards sustainability. We will measure our impacts, and communicate our progress and practices to the hostel community and the community as a whole. In this spirit, we have identified the following principles as important to our hostel network.

  • Energy Conservation
  • Recycling
  • Protecting Natural Environments
  • Reduced Consumption
  • Environmental Education

Hostelling International, and its Member Associations, commit to intensifying their efforts to achieve a worldwide network of sustainable organisations and hostels. In doing so, we recognize that true sustainability involves the development of clear and measurable objectives in the following areas:

The social purpose of the HI network, as positioned in the constitution, provides the basis for the continuous development of our social and cultural objectives.

Exceptional efforts to clearly reduce the carbon footprint of HI hostels worldwide and work towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Development which will ensure financially independent hostels with assured quality and standards worldwide.

Since 1934, Hostelling International USA has operated a network of hostels to encourage and enable low impact travel while preserving and protecting the landmark buildings, national parks, and communities that they are part of. Our hostels are built on the concept of shared spaces to foster interaction between guests and reduce our footprint.

From retrofitting historic buildings in New York City & Chicago, to repurposing lighthouses in California, HI-USA has sought to minimize our impact while providing high quality, comfortable and affordable accommodations. HI-USA hostels offer a wide range of hostel stay experiences, whether you’ve stayed with us in the past, or you’re discovering hostels for the first time.
